Workshop Foreman

Town / county: Essex
Job type: Full Time Job
Job description: Job Description Factory Foreman

Gerard Lewis Designs is a furniture manufacturer producing fine quality furniture for the upper end of the private and contract market. We currently service a UK customer base with plans to extend into Europe and the rest of the world.
To help us in our plans for growth we are now looking for a person of mature outlook but not necessarily years, who is able to shoulder responsibility with ease and who has bags of common sense. Someone who would be confident in managing the day to day running of a busy furniture production workshop.

• Experience is essential in the industry of furniture production.

• You will need to be an experienced wood machinist with a thorough working knowledge of woodworking machines and an understanding of the processes undertaken in a machine shop.

• Have a thorough knowledge of cabinet construction, and be well versed in the use of solid woods and veneers.

• Conversant with AutoCAD. Able to read CAD drawings and create a cutting list from the drawing.

• Good knowledge of all types of fixtures and fittings

• An appreciation of polishing and the process involved in the finishing of furniture

You will be reporting to the Partner involved in the production side of the business. Your role will be to oversee the day to day running of the factory covering all aspects of the production of furniture against orders received. Many of the items of furniture produced are one-off bespoke items so a knowledge of jig work and how a piece of furniture is produced is critical; from the initial CAD drawing, cutting list, machines used to cut up the board or solid wood, to the construction, polishing and final fitting up of the piece. Your job will be to mange those members of staff employed in each of those specific areas, but you must also be not only able, but keen to join in, and apply your skills of furniture making in any area as and when required.

Good interpersonal and communication skills are essential. You should be able to show leadership qualities but also be able to work with a team of people. Ideally you have already been employed in this role before or are at the stage in your career where you are ready for this next step.
